Dyeing Cotton with Plants of Appalachia :: Sept. 9th :: 12pm-5pm
Do you want to freshen up an old shirt or dye some socks or napkins? Have you wondered what plants growing outside your door would make dye?
In this one day workshop, learn how to dye cotton fabric with wild appalachian plants and natural dye extracts.
In this hands-on workshop, we will prepare our cotton goods for dyeing and learn the importance of scouring and mordanting. We will calculate dye stuffs and prepare dye baths from wild collected plants (walnut and goldenrod) and a natural dye extract (madder). We will learn a few techniques for creating patterns on dye goods and spend the afternoon dyeing our wares. Working with shades of red, yellow and brown, we will be mimicking the beauty of fall that surrounds us in this outdoor classroom.
Participants are invited to bring cotton goods of their choose, up to 2 pounds. Specific details will be included with registration confirmation. Additionally, several dye ready goods will be available for purchase for those eager to dye more.
No experience necessary.
