Are you interested in being a part of a series of community sessions that walk you through the process of making paper with kudzu? This is an experiment focused on materials exploration, community learning, and creative problem solving. Come for one or come for all. You’ll get a sense of what’s involved to turn this abundant resource into usable paper.

INVESTMENT: These sessions are by donation. Participants can bring cash or check day of, send a donation through venmo (@thepatchworkundeground) or make a donation during registration. No one is turned away due to lack of funds. Your presence and curiosity are enough.


DATE AND TIME:


It is expected that folks arrive at the start of each session so that we can go over the process together before getting to work. You’re welcome to stay for the entirely of the session but you can also leave early as needed.


August 22. 10am-12pm Kudzu harvest. Meet at 10am at New Belgium Brewing in the RAD and we'll walk to a greenway harvest spot. No registration needed.


August 26. 5:30-7:00pm. Kudzu harvest and visit to ferment tank. Fairview, NC. Will require preregistration to get details.


Sept. 9. 5:30-8pm Vine cleaning + cooking session. Fairview, NC. Will require preregistration to get details.


September 13. 1-4pm. Papermaking session + vine cleaning and cooking. Fairview, NC. Will require preregistration to get details.


LOCATION: Various locations based on which part of the process we're working on. Many sessions will be at The Patchwork Underground in Fairview.


THINGS TO BRING: Depending on the task, you may need:

  • long pants, long sleeve shirt and closed toed shoes (harvest and cook days)
  • garden gloves, hand pruners (harvest days)
  • dishwashing gloves, water resistant apron (vine cleaning and cooking)
  • eye protection (cooking)
  • drinking water and snacks
  • sunglasses and sunscreen are also encouraged. 


REGISTRATION: In order to plan for carpooling and parking, Fairview sessions require registration at least two days in advance of the scheduled date so that specific event details can be conveyed the day before.

ACCESSIBILITY: Please note that indoor restroom facilities will not be available during these sessions but you can pee behind a tree. These are hands-on sessions that require some strength and dexterity. Moving around the site, standing, lifting, bending over and repetitive tasks are involved. All sessions are outdoors and in lawn areas or paved surfaces. There can be ways to adapt some parts of the process. Please reach out of you have accessibility needs and want to discuss them to see if this is a good fit for you.


CANCELLATION POLICY: If you cannot make a session that you registered for, please let me know so I can open up the space to someone on the waitlist.
