Many local plants lend themselves to basket making. In this Coiled Basketry workshop, we will create a vessel with kudzu vines.

Coiling is a hand-stitching process that transforms a continuous bundle of fibers into a strong and versatile container. Found in cultures worldwide, it is an accessible technique to create one-of-a-kind baskets from plants growing in your backyard. Needing only plant materials, a needle, thread, and some time, coiling is a well matched activity for folks who need to keep their hands busy.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • plants that work well for coiling
  • how to harvest, dry and prepare fibers
  • stitching and finishing techniques

We will go out for a few hours the first day to harvest kudzu vines from a local site. The remaining workshop time will be spect processing materials and making our baskets. Depending on your work pace, you will be able to complete a small basket and leave with reference material and some skills to do this again on your own.

Great for beginning basket makers, folks who enjoy sewing, and those with weaving experience that want to learn more about using local plants.

INVESTMENT: $180 workshop fee, all needed materials included

Please note- if this workshop has your heart singing and you cannot afford to join me, be in touch for a scholarship, sliding scale or work trade option. There is a spot reserved in each workshop for reduced or waived fee, or work trade option.
